NGF TOP 100 BUSINESSES IN GOLF
Formed in 2004, the R&A’s mission is to engage in and support activities undertaken to benefit the game. Although it derives its name from the membership club, it is separate and distinct from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
Together with the USGA, The R&A governs the sport of golf worldwide, operating in separate jurisdictions while sharing a commitment to a single code for the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status and Equipment Standards.
The R&A organizes The Open Championship, golf’s oldest and most international major tournament, as well as events including The Amateur Championship, The Boys Amateur Championship, and various international matches, including the Walker Cup.
The R&A is also heavily active in golf development, with an emphasis on junior golf, coaching, public golf courses, improved practice facilities and the promotion of the sport in emerging golf nations. Additionally, it provides best practice guidelines for course management, seeking to help golf continue growing in commercially and environmentally sustainable way.
In 2017, The R&A merged with the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU), taking on governance responsibility for women’s golf (including the Women’s British Open) in the United Kingdom.
