Questions, Answers and Insights for Everyone Interested in the Business of Golf

The ‘Q’uestion

by Erik Matuszewski

January 2018

The PGA Tour opened up the year with back-to-back tournaments in Hawaii: the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui, and the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

So, just how many golf courses are there in Hawaii and which islands have the most?

In total, the Aloha State is home to 89 golf courses, 70 of which are open to public play.

With approximately 79% of the total supply open to all golfers, that exceeds the national average of about 75%. This accessibility stands to reason given the strong tourism component in Hawaii and the number of resort-based golf properties.

Oahu is home to the Hawaii’s capital city of Honolulu as well as the most courses in the islands, with 40.

The Big Island of Hawaii features 22 courses, followed by Maui with 13. Kauai has nine golf courses, Lanai counts two and Molokai has a single 9-hole layout.
